About the LHPC
Founded in 2015, The Langston Hughes Poetry Center is dedicated to promoting the work of poets of color from around the world. The center is named in honor of Langston Hughes who visited Allen’s campus in 1931 to give a public reading of his poetry in the university's historic Chappelle Auditorium.
The center's mission is to carry on Hughes' legacy by supporting the work of any poet whose work is committed to celebrating Black joy or combatting racial and economic exploitation in the US and around the globe.
Located at 1329 Pine Street in the historic Waverly neighborhood of Columbia, SC, our space maintains an expanding archive of more than 1000 books of poetry and hosts community programs designed to encourage poetic creation and performance.
